Detoxification from drugs is an uncomfortable process, but the dangers increase proportionally with how dangerous the drugs are. A lot of the withdrawal symptoms are standard, such as nausea, irritability, sleep disturbances, etc. One of the most worrisome ones is that of suicidal ideations, commonly seen in people trying to quit heroin.

Depression and suicidal thoughts during detox are almost a given when deciding to give up a heroin addiction. The best way to ensure that this doesn’t pose a real risk to one’s safety is to choose an inpatient facility for detoxification and treatment. In the event that this is not possible, ensure that you are never alone, at least until the worst has passed. The first few days are the worst, but the thoughts may appear at any time, so it is best to stay monitored until you believe you are stable enough to keep yourself safe. It is also important to remove any temptation such as toxic substances and utensils that may harm you.

Keep an eye out for warning signs such as heightened temper, expression of suicidal and morbid thoughts, etc. It is not something that should be taken lightly. If you are worried that someone you know, who is overcoming an addiction, may be a risk to himself or herself, get them the help they need as soon as possible.
