The first step is admitting that you have a problem, then, what next? Upon recognizing that you have a drinking problem, subsequently, the best thing to do would be to seek help with alcoholism. Your first thought may be to tackle it by yourself, but there’s no room for shame or nobility here.
Help with Alcoholism: Identifying Alcohol Use Disorder
Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) comes about when a person’s level of drinking starts to affect their physical and mental functioning. The disorder is characterized by a multitude of symptoms, such as depression, irritability, insomnia, flushed complexion, and gaps in memory, to name a few. There can be a fine line between identifying someone who has AUD, as opposed to someone who may simply enjoy alcohol, but does not have a medical problem.
To get a better picture of how deep the problem runs, there are some simple, general questions to be addressed before deciding that a medical intervention for help with alcoholism is the best route. Inquiring about abstinence, and frequency of drinking would be a good start, as well as determining whether the habit has affected the social and economic aspects of life. Intervention may be recommended once an affirmative answer is given to at least two of the aforementioned questions.
Upon identifying the need for a medical intervention, it would be best to consult a medical doctor with whom you have an established relationship. A doctor would be able to better guide you as to the next step to take, and after some assessment, give you some insight into the treatment plans available, and which would be most appropriately suited to you.
Before you’re able to commence a treatment plan, you will have to undergo detoxification, to cleanse your body of alcohol. This is then followed by the treatment plan you decided upon. Generally, this will involve preparing you for a life of sobriety, counseling, and medications, all aimed to make your transition as smooth as possible.
In order for you to be successful in your endeavors to achieve sobriety, there must be at least an inkling of internal motivation. It may be weak at first, but with the help of those around you, you will rise above.Back to Blog
